Art Exhibition 'Destinations' by Aruban Artist Grace Ashruf

ORANJESTAD - Grace Ashruf is very proud to exhibit her latest collection of original Art titled 'Destinations' on Wednesday, October 26th. The exposition will take place in the OLD Garage Cordia Building,  at L.G. Smith Blvd. 114 and continue for two weeks.

This collection of 30 original artworks is a fusion of Contemporary Art and names of Aruban Neighborhoods. The works not only reflect the names of popular places on the island, but also many of the ancient aboriginal names given them by the native Indians. Much of the true significance of these names and their origins remain unknown.

“Each painting in this collection consists of 3 layers” Grace explains, “first, a heavily textured base composition, which is then flavored with a very abstracted landscape; on top of that, a color composition. It is like I have created 3 paintings on one canvas. I don't set out completely to create a work, instead, once started, I let the material and my intuition lead the way."

Strong composition, visual texture, bold use of color, and trusting her intuition are just some elements that Grace employs in creating works. Her artworks are modern, colorful and vibrant. It is a portrayal of passionate sensations and impressions of feelings. The result is work that evokes a strong response by viewers. "I want people to be viscerally moved when they look at my work. The intellectual stuff can come afterwards," the artist said.

Grace has presented a number of solo and collective exhibitions to the public over the years,  from which she has gained a good reputation and positive responses.

This year the artist will donate 10% of revenues from this exhibition to Kinderhuis Casa Cuna in Aruba in the same manner she has donated proceeds from her 2009 solo show to the Kinderhuis Imeldahof.

Grace Ashruf is grateful  to Garage Cordia for the kind use of their old facility.

A celebratory cocktail will toast the opening night, from 7.30 pm to 10.00 pm  – all are welcome. The exhibition is open for  (2)Two Weeks, from Monday to Friday  from 10-2 pm  / 4-6 pm  and Saturday from 10-5 pm.  Entrance is free.

Exhibition SUN AND MOON EXPRESSION

by Aruba Daily on Monday, September 19, 2011 at 6:37am

ORANJESTAD - Jeanne Ecury and Harold Bronswinkel have a duo show in the Westin Aruba Art Gallery. Jeanne Ecury had several exhibitions before in both Curacao and Aruba. She has taken private painting lessons where she began with carbon and ink, and aquarelle and proceeded with acrylic.
Harold Bronswinkel did many workshops in the Netherlands, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic and Aruba. He also started out with aquarelle and with decorating ceramic products. He has exhibited solo and in group shows in Aruba.

Jeanne and Harold had a duo exhibition a few years ago in Cas di Cultura. About the current theme they say: “We have chosen for the sun and the moon; life is influenced by them after all. Light provides color and warmth and it evokes emotions. The sun and moon have an influence on the mysterious urge from which inspiration, creativity and experiences arise. Which gives us the urge to make it visible.”
Jeanne and Harold did this with paint and brushes on canvas.

“There are painters who turn the sun into a yellow dot. There are artists who through their art and intelligence turn a yellow dot into a sun.” Pablo Picasso The opening of this exhibition is on Friday, September 23, at 8 PM and everyone is welcome.

The Gallery is open every day of the week and is freely accessible.

U.S. Premiere of Aruban Artists' "Microcosm" Exhibition

U.S. Premiere of Aruban Artists' "Microcosm" Exhibition

Press Preview and Breakfast on September 16th

" Toys of the Conquistador" by Ciro Abath

(Washington, D.C.) - For the first time, ten contemporary Aruban artists will collectively exhibit their work in the United States at the Residence of the Dutch Ambassador in Washington, D.C. The "Microcosm"" exhibition is part of a series of events recognizing Aruba's 25 years of Status Aparte within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The multi-disciplinary exhibition, consisting of site-specific installations, sculpture, mixed-media assemblage, video, paintings, collage, photography and drawings, brings together the artwork of noted Caribbean artists: Ciro Abath, Telka Van Dodewaard, Rob ter Haar, Glenda Heyliger, Elisa Lejuez Peters, Elvis Lopez, Alida Martinez, Osaira Muyale, Ryan Oduber and Hugo Palmar. These artists represent the diverse and eclectic reality of the Aruban "Microcosm" within the Kingdom.

Several of the Aruban artists have exhibited internationally and won awards. Alida Martinez won the 2010 residency prize at the Triennial International of the Caribbean in the Dominican Republic with her installation "Mega-Bite Candy." Ryan Oduber received the Caribbean spotlight award for his cinematography of the short film "Muhe Frida" on the life of Frida Kahlo during the 2011 Aruba International Film Festival.

"Microcosm" runs September 17th through October 15th and juxtaposes contemporary Aruban art with the classic 17th century Dutch masters on display in the Residence producing conversations on how the microcosm of Aruba defines itself within the macrocosm of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

The Aruban art work engages with the existing Dutch masters and objects at the Residence in dynamic ways creating thought provoking contrasts. Ciro Abath's sculpture, "Toys of the Conquistador" stands next to a neo-classical sculpture in the garden of the Residence, providing a dialogue between contemporary and classical art. Found objects are displayed in an 18th century Dutch mahogany dressing cupboard. A photographic self-portrait of Telka Van Dodewaard is placed next to a vanitas-influenced drawing of a woman, reflecting on the impermanence of life and beauty.

Curated by Laura Roulet, Gijs Stork and Renwick Heronimo, a team of American, Dutch and Aruban contemporary art experts, "Microcosm" is the first phase of an international multicultural and policy focused initiative to create a platform where contemporary art serves as a medium to create awareness and dialogue among these participating regions.

As part of this initiative, the Aruban artists will visit relevant art institutions in Washington D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and New York to forge new ties with like minded individuals.

Additionally, a policy seminar co-organized with the Organization of American States will explore how Aruba is transforming itself from an economy based on tourism to a more diversified economy and a reliable investment partner.

"The 'Microcosm' exhibition illustrates that the Kingdom of the Netherlands is a macrocosm that stretches over two continents offering a rich diversity of people and cultures. 'Microcosm' highlights the multi-cultural foundation of the Kingdom and reveals a creative tradition that extends from the Old Masters to today's contemporary Aruban artists," said Dutch Ambassador Renée Jones-Bos. "The exhibition celebrates the unique relationship between Aruba and the Netherlands and reveals how an autonomous entity thrives within the Kingdom," added the Ambassador.

Journalists are invited to a press preview of "Microcosm" on September 16th at 8am at the Residence of the Ambassador. Aruban artists and curators will lead journalists through the exhibition. Dutch Ambassador Renée Jones-Bos and Aruban Minister of Economic Affairs, Social Affairs and Culture Michelle Hooyboer-Winklaar will also be present. Members of the media must RSVP to attend the press preview breakfast by emailing cy.bundy@minbuza.nl by September 12th.

"Microcosm" will be open to the public by appointment only from September 17th to October 15th from 9:30am to 11:30am. Reservations must be made by emailing was-gma@minbuza.nl with the date and time requested.

Exhibition Artist Aruba Danillo Geerman

This time not on Saturday, but on Thursday July 21st,  Danilo Geerman opens his solo exhibition in the Westin Aruba Art Gallery.

This well-known Aruban artist studied at the Academy of The Hague and at the Academy for Plastic Arts in Maastricht.  At Atelier ’89 and the Venezuelan Institute for Art and Culture he took several courses.

Danilo exhibited several times in The Netherlands and in Aruba, both solo as well as in group shows.

He describes his upcoming exhibition as follows.

Transmutation is the phase I'm in right now, I took my Tree of Life and put it under a microscope, and see in the Nano world how the transformation of organic material takes place in different stages.

This is a whole new process for me, exploring the inner world of life. Going deep into the beginning of the organic world. The transformation from one species to another, trying to find the gap in the evolution of the tree of life.  Live for art, because without art you don ‘t live.

The exhibition is open daily and is freely accessible for everyone.

Nigel Matthew opened first solo expo at Westin Art Gallery

by Aruba Daily on Monday, May 16, 2011 at 5:36am

“Roots, Religion and Reptiles” will be on view until mid-June

Aruban artist and former art teacher, Nigel Matthew opened his first solo exhibition on Saturday night to a packed Westin Art Gallery full of his family, friends and fans. Using the religious symbolism he grew up with in the heavily Roman Catholic Society, he has created modern “iconic” art works which embraces the same devotion and richness as traditional Greek Orthodox icons. His religion’s elaborate amount of symbolism and rituals played a great role in his childhood fantasy, and part of this exhibit are these fantasies on canvas.
He was also intrigued by a recent discovery of an old family photo album, and challenged himself to allow his new discovery to be the source of inspiration for his first solo expo. Beautiful photographs of his parents, grandparents and other relatives, being the Roots of his Life, left their imprints on his retina, but it was a great challenge to create works of art that could reflect not only his ethnical background, but also his skills as an artist. So he chose to make use of the old art form of painting religious portraits on wooden panels, in a contemporary style.

Once he got on his creative rollercoaster as Nigel calls it, everything started to fall into place. He took the liberty of playing with shapes, colors and textures coming from his fervent passion for shells and lizards, as a replacement for so many religious symbols. Reptiles, such as lizards and iquanas, the most common fauna around us here in Aruba, boldly shows off their undeniable beauty on his canvasses. These creatures often come to visit the artist in his studio.
Nigel hopes that, by means of these visual images, to either sympathize or criticize the never-ending theme of Religion.

The Westin Art Gallery is located in the upper lobby of the Westin Resort in Palm Beach. The gallery welcomes everybody to come in and view the art at any time. Roots, Religion and Reptiles will be on view until the middle of June.

Upcoming Thursday night it's so far: Opening of the art pieces made during the workshops Photography and Image and Sound.

The workshop Photography guided by master artist Rob Slooten, accumulate a great deal of nice pictures. A group of fifteen students who participated at this workshop produced in ten different assignments a total of more than a thousand great pictures. Of these grand total a severe selection has been made under the keene eye of master Rob Slooten.

A great part of these pictures selected will be printed on a larger size. Wonderful is it to see, how these different participants within their own style, trough these different assignments, made these unique pictures. From pictures put into special scenes to pictures taken of the street life. There is a great deal of interesting pictures to come and see and admire.

Image and Sound, dictated by master artist Hans Muller in Music, has come up with a great deal of art pieces unique and apart.

With a selected group they have been producing different animation films. Very special is the series called "Spititu" (ghost), wich has been made at night with a selection of colorful masks. Also the films where a "Cashew" plays the main role, called in Dutch " gezellige maatjes", (happy mates). As Hans says, the participants worked very experimental and from the start they came with excellent ideas and grouped up to produce these. This came to produce a couple of most interesting movies.

About Aruban Artist : Edmond Tujeehut

Edmond Tujeehut // 23-01-1954

Edmond Tom Tujeehut was born 23th of January 1954 in Aruba. As a small lad he already was into art. His love for art was visible at a young age. His big passions were dancing and drawing. After finishing secondary school, his love for drawing opened the opportunity to get a job in the art-room of Aruba Sign N.V. There a colleague and now a dear friend also an artist, Frank Croes, noticed his talents and advised him to inscribe at one of Holland’s best academies of art located in Tilburg.
In 1978 he was accepted at the “Akademie voor Beeldendevorming” in Tilburg. Soon his talents were visible in his paintings and sculptures. From that moment he knew he didn’t want to become anything else but an artist. Teachers at the academy inspired and encouraged him to combine the European style, teached at the academy with his afro/Caribbean roots.
In 1983 Edmond Tujeehut finished his studies. Today as a certified teacher and artist, the combination of a European education and his roots are strongly visible in his work. Edmond Tujeehut is an artist that dominates all techniques, which enables him to work different styles.
Edmond’s mood and the theme influence the result of his work. Working with the brush and/or pallet-knife are his favored tools to apply the bright colors he loves when painting and driftwood, sea-stones and found materials inspires him when working 3D. Edmond has since his arriving on Aruba numerous expositions on the island and on the other ABC islands. He is also invited regular to give workshop on Curaçao and Bonaire.

ROSEA NOBO

His work for this expo with the theme: ROSEA NOBO, is inspired by the different crisis our world is daily confronted with, such as: political, social, human and natural crisis. That is what made him decide to make black and white paintings and use natural materials such as driftwood, sea stones and found materials create his 3D work, to illustrate his views of what he calls “Art in times of Crisis”.
The works he participates with are two paintings and four sculptures.

Aruba, March, 2011

Descriptions of the artwork of Edmond Tujeehut
Paintings
Earth Crack // Consist of two pieces // Material: Acryl on canvas // Size: 80cm x 65cm

Earth Crack // The painting is an impression of an earth crack that runs true both pieces from beginning to end to create the feeling that you have reached a borderline of misery. The reason to start direct from the beginning is to indicate that it is something you do not expect and that it suddenly happens and to leave with no ending is to leave the question what is happening afterwards. The darkness behind the crack indicates the sad situation it brings with it. The reason that the artist made it two pieces is to indicate that it not happens only once but that it can repeat.

Silent Witnesses // Material: Acryl on canvas // Size: 80cm x 65cm

Silent Witnesses // Most of the times in a crisis of an earthquake we no what human beings went thru, because they could tell their experiences and that’s why we see them as victims and all the focus go to them. No one thinks of the collapsed building and materials because we accept that they don’t have feelings, just because they can not speak and therefore not being recognized as victims by us, and get no attention. This inspired the artist to make this painting to let us know that collapsed buildings and materials are victims too, but only silent ones.

Sculptures
The Beggar // Material: Sea Stone

The Beggar // Beggars are victims of an economic crisis and are known all around the world. Little attention is given to these people because they consider them worthless, and nobody sees them as failing of the government of the country or a victim of a crisis. That is why the artist thought it was in its place to bring them to our attention and to choose sea stone that is seen as a worthless material just like the beggar for those who are not familiar with them. But for those who know and handled with them, know how precious they are.

Fountain of Life // Material: Sea Stone > Brass > Driftwood

Fountain of Life // Water that is a creation of God is one of the big crisis in the world especially if you don’t have it to drink. It is given by nature but nowadays if you can pay for it you don’t have it. We can ask our self if the luxury of having running water is a fountain of life.

Man - I - Pulaited // Material: Cement > Driftwood > Steel > Electric wires

Man - I - Pulaited // In time of crisis the situation makes weak people easy to manipulate. Most of the times these people are being used to go against there one people. They are persons without a backbone, not complete and with out a mind of there own. It is like they are directed as a computer. That’s why the artist wanted to give an impression how he sees one who is manipulated and created: Man - I - Pulated.

Harp of Misery // Material: Driftwood > Plastic > Brass

Harp of Misery // Just like in the painting Silent Witnesses the artist wanted to give these materials that went through so many chances if it would be possible to create them in a form that they could express there self that maybe one day they will do that. So if the day comes that it would happen it will be in a song and he is sure it will be a sad song. Therefor he titled his piece Harp of Misery.

Puppy in pain // Material: Sea Stone > Driftwood > Brass

Puppy in pain // In time of crisis because of the situation animals that we love get lost, or get neglected. We as humans have each other to help one another, but the animals depend on their owners and therefore suffer unnecessary. As an animal lover it hurts to see the animals go true pain because of neglect ion. That made the artist created “Puppy in Pain” to get peoples attention to this problem.
