Art Exhibition 'Destinations' by Aruban Artist Grace Ashruf

ORANJESTAD - Grace Ashruf is very proud to exhibit her latest collection of original Art titled 'Destinations' on Wednesday, October 26^th. The exposition will take place in the OLD Garage Cordia Building,  at L.G. Smith Blvd. 114 and continue for two weeks.


This collection of 30 original artworks is a fusion of Contemporary Art and names of Aruban Neighborhoods. The works not only reflect the names of popular places on the island, but also many of the ancient aboriginal names given them by the native Indians. Much of the true significance of these names and their origins remain unknown.

“Each painting in this collection consists of 3 layers” Grace explains, “first, a heavily textured base composition, which is then flavored with a very abstracted landscape; on top of that, a color composition. It is like I have created 3 paintings on one canvas. I don't set out completely to create a work, instead, once started, I let the material and my intuition lead the way."

Strong composition, visual texture, bold use of color, and trusting her intuition are just some elements that Grace employs in creating works. Her artworks are modern, colorful and vibrant. It is a portrayal of passionate sensations and impressions of feelings. The result is work that evokes a strong response by viewers. "I want people to be viscerally moved when they look at my work. The intellectual stuff can come afterwards," the artist said.  

Grace has presented a number of solo and collective exhibitions to the public over the years,  from which she has gained a good reputation and positive responses.

This year the artist will donate 10% of revenues from this exhibition to Kinderhuis Casa Cuna in Aruba in the same manner she has donated proceeds from her 2009 solo show to the Kinderhuis Imeldahof.

A celebratory cocktail will toast the opening night, from 7.30 pm to 10.00 pm  – all are welcome. The exhibition is open for  (2)Two Weeks, from Monday to Friday  from 10-2 pm  / 4-6 pm  and Saturday from 10-5 pm.  Entrance is free.

Exhibition SUN AND MOON EXPRESSION

ORANJESTAD - Jeanne Ecury and Harold Bronswinkel have a duo show in the Westin Aruba Art Gallery. Jeanne Ecury had several exhibitions before in both Curacao and Aruba. She has taken private painting lessons where she began with carbon and ink, and aquarelle and proceeded with acrylic.

Harold Bronswinkel did many workshops in the Netherlands, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic and Aruba. He also started out with aquarelle and with decorating ceramic products. He has exhibited solo and in group shows in Aruba.

Jeanne and Harold had a duo exhibition a few years ago in Cas di Cultura. About the current theme they say: “We have chosen for the sun and the moon; life is influenced by them after all. Light provides color and warmth and it evokes emotions. The sun and moon have an influence on the mysterious urge from which inspiration, creativity and experiences arise. Which gives us the urge to make it visible.”

Jeanne and Harold did this with paint and brushes on canvas.

ATELIERS '89 PRESENTS THEIR NEW WORKSHOPS FOR OCTOBER 2011

ONE OF "FASHION" AND ONE OF "DRAWING COMBINED WITH WRITING"

GIVEN BY LOCAL ARTIST MELISA RICHARDSON "FASHION" AND PJ. VAN ROGGEBAND "DRAWING"  

 

Ateliers '89, situated at Dominicanessensteet 34, presents a workshop of Fashion especially for al the talented youth and adults with great taste for fashion and also to those ones who wants to enroll into drawing together with writing! We invite al youth starting up from fourteen and to adults "young at heart" who wants to experience these unique workshops full of creativity with no limits, starting October the 10'th to November the 3'th 2011.

The workshop titled "fashion" has a duration of 4 weeks, where participants under the guide of local artist Melisa Richardson, have to design one or more "wearable pieces". Each garment has to be inspired by the main theme of the workshop which is "Feelings and Emotions". This depicts that each participant has to explore his or her own world of emotions and feelings theta he or she chooses, they can works their designs with unconventional materials; for example metal to illustrate strong emotions.

 

Along this fashion workshop the students will learn about the world of fashion, the arts and all that has to do with putting your show together and the producing of your designs. Each participant will guide their part of the show in every detail such as; from the designs to hair and make-up, also music and lighting for the final show. There will be a model casting that will take during the second week of the workshop, where the participants have the opportunity to choose their own model to work with. Also their will be a foto-shooting so they can make their design more appealing. The workshop will end with a runway show which will take place during the "Aruba In Style'' which will take Aruba of course in a fashion frenzy.  

Every person will have four days a week to work from Monday to Thursday from 6.30'PM to 9.30'PM., under the guide of Melisa Richardson and PJ. van Roggeband. Both are extremely pleased to work with all that are interested in creating this beautiful fusion between fashion art, drawing and writing, as they are exploring the interesting way of expressing themselves trough their feelings and emotions.

PJ. van Roggeband is a very gentile person who is also very content and committed to come and share with our local talents and look forward to a unique and vibrant workshop. In his workshop he will combine Drawing, Writing and gives the opportunity to transmit these in to masks. So again the sky is the limit.

In this workshop each student will start making a series of drawings in carbon or Chinese ink on paper,

huge words and small observations; with the sole title of FREE AT HEART, where the master artist PJ. van Roggeband will take care of each and every one trough this workshop,with lots of love and patients, where drawing and writing are central. In these workshop the participants will work with different materials, from fast sketches to illustrations that require more time. Next to pure text the writing part will concentrate on how to incorporate a text into an image (Picture/Drawing) or the other way or else. Wonderful is that their will be an open opportunity for (sound)poetry, depending on the participant and how to present this.

Also there will be space for mask making and other attribution to the final presentation. 

The final presentation will be on Friday the 4th. of November at 7'PM. This unique event will be put together with a runway show, as in and part of "Aruba In Style". This opening of the fashion, drawing exhibition will be, presented along with opening of Youth BRA-ART. Especially for the awareness of breast cancer with the collaboration of the fabulous Mary Joan Foundation.

U.S. Premiere of Aruban Artists' "Microcosm" Exhibition

(Washington, D.C.) - For the first time, ten contemporary Aruban artists will collectively exhibit their work in the United States at the Residence of the Dutch Ambassador in Washington, D.C. The "Microcosm"" exhibition is part of a series of events recognizing Aruba's 25 years of Status Aparte within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The multi-disciplinary exhibition, consisting of site-specific installations, sculpture, mixed-media assemblage, video, paintings, collage, photography and drawings, brings together the artwork of noted Caribbean artists: Ciro Abath, Telka Van Dodewaard, Rob ter Haar, Glenda Heyliger, Elisa Lejuez Peters, Elvis Lopez, Alida Martinez, Osaira Muyale, Ryan Oduber and Hugo Palmar. These artists represent the diverse and eclectic reality of the Aruban "Microcosm" within the Kingdom.

Several of the Aruban artists have exhibited internationally and won awards. Alida Martinez won the 2010 residency prize at the Triennial International of the Caribbean in the Dominican Republic with her installation "Mega-Bite Candy." Ryan Oduber received the Caribbean spotlight award for his cinematography of the short film "Muhe Frida" on the life of Frida Kahlo during the 2011 Aruba International Film Festival.

"Microcosm" runs September 17th through October 15th and juxtaposes contemporary Aruban art with the classic 17th century Dutch masters on display in the Residence producing conversations on how the microcosm of Aruba defines itself within the macrocosm of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

The Aruban art work engages with the existing Dutch masters and objects at the Residence in dynamic ways creating thought provoking contrasts. Ciro Abath's sculpture, "Toys of the Conquistador" stands next to a neo-classical sculpture in the garden of the Residence, providing a dialogue between contemporary and classical art. Found objects are displayed in an 18th century Dutch mahogany dressing cupboard. A photographic self-portrait of Telka Van Dodewaard is placed next to a vanitas-influenced drawing of a woman, reflecting on the impermanence of life and beauty.

Curated by Laura Roulet, Gijs Stork and Renwick Heronimo, a team of American, Dutch and Aruban contemporary art experts, "Microcosm" is the first phase of an international multicultural and policy focused initiative to create a platform where contemporary art serves as a medium to create awareness and dialogue among these participating regions.

As part of this initiative, the Aruban artists will visit relevant art institutions in Washington D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and New York to forge new ties with like minded individuals.

Additionally, a policy seminar co-organized with the Organization of American States will explore how Aruba is transforming itself from an economy based on tourism to a more diversified economy and a reliable investment partner.

"The 'Microcosm' exhibition illustrates that the Kingdom of the Netherlands is a macrocosm that stretches over two continents offering a rich diversity of people and cultures. 'Microcosm' highlights the multi-cultural foundation of the Kingdom and reveals a creative tradition that extends from the Old Masters to today's contemporary Aruban artists," said Dutch Ambassador Renée Jones-Bos. "The exhibition celebrates the unique relationship between Aruba and the Netherlands and reveals how an autonomous entity thrives within the Kingdom," added the Ambassador.

Journalists are invited to a press preview of "Microcosm" on September 16th at 8am at the Residence of the Ambassador. Aruban artists and curators will lead journalists through the exhibition. Dutch Ambassador Renée Jones-Bos and Aruban Minister of Economic Affairs, Social Affairs and Culture Michelle Hooyboer-Winklaar will also be present. Per August 15, 2011 the regular lessons for Artistic Education and Art Review/Appreciation of Foundation Mira will start. The school has finished the time schedule for the course year 2011. A new time schedule for the lessons on Thursday evening and Saterday morning has been made.

The time schedule for all other lesson days as well as all groups of children has remained unchanged.

The school admits children starting age 4. For young children between ages 4 and 13 there are the lessons in Artistic Education and Art Review, 1 1/2 hours. For youth/young adults starting age 14 there are the lessons in Artistic Education (Drawing/Painting/Experimental Art and Art Review/Appreciation), also 1 1/2 hours,.

The monthly tuition fee is inclusive of: drawing and painting materials, all paper and one framed drawing, or one painting on canvas for the yearly exposition. You do not have to buy anything for the lessons! For the new school year registration forms must to be filled out, signed and submitted. This can be done as of Monday next, 8 August 2011.

We hope to have our yearly exposition in November 2011. We like to welcome those who will follow the
lessons in 2011-2012 and to wish them lots of joy during the lessons.

Exhibition Artist Aruba Danillo Geerman

This time not on Saturday, but on Thursday July 21^st,  Danilo Geerman opens his solo exhibition in the Westin Aruba Art Gallery.

This well-known Aruban artist studied at the Academy of The Hague and at the Academy for Plastic Arts in Maastricht.  At Atelier ’89 and the Venezuelan Institute for Art and Culture he took several courses.

Danilo exhibited several times in The Netherlands and in Aruba, both solo as well as in group shows.

He describes his upcoming exhibition as follows.

Transmutation is the phase I'm in right now, I took my Tree of Life and put it under a microscope, and see in the Nano world how the transformation of organic material takes place in different stages.

This is a whole new process for me, exploring the inner world of life. Going deep into the beginning of the organic world. The transformation from one species to another, trying to find the gap in the evolution of the tree of life.  Live for art, because without art you don ‘t live.

The exhibition is open daily and is freely accessible for everyone.
